DeWalt Planer Knives

Our high-speed steel and carbide-tipped planer knives for DeWalt 734 & 735 provide an improvement in quality and extend the live of the blades, giving you better cuts and more time to work, rather than maintain your machine.

he Dewalt 735 is one of the most popular and best-reviewed portable planers on the market. I mean, it is a really nice machine. Super nice. Darn near perfect. But...there might be room for improving it just a little, so let's talk about one quick way.
he Dewalt 735 is a popular and well-reviewed portable planer. Super nice. Darn near perfect. One place for improving it just a little is with replacement knives.

We've been selling high quality replacement High Speed Steel (HSS) & Carbide-Tipped planer and jointer knives for more than 10 years. In fact, we've got more than 30 different sizes of high quality replacement knives for your planer and jointer here.  A few years back we started receiving requests to make a superior quality knife for DeWalt's 735 planer. Apparently, many folks were not satisfied with their OEM knives. So we began by testing the OEM knives and figuring out how to make them better. After many months of development (trial and error) we introduced our Infinity brand High Speed Steel and Carbide-Tipped Replacement knives for the Dewalt 735. Both knives have proven to be a great way to upgrade this planer.

The OEM knives are great right out of the box and give a beautiful finish. Unfortunately, since they are made with a thinner, inferior quality steel and a poor tempering process, they tend to loose their edge faster. Generally speaking, the thinner the steel, the less mass there is available to dissipate heat from the cutting edge. That means that the edge looses temper and breaks down sooner. And this means you are replacing those knives way more often.

The steel OEM knives in the middle are significantly thinner than the Infinity replacement knives. From left to right (Infinity hss knives, OEM knives, Infinity carbide-tipped knives).

The Infinity High Speed Steel Knives, item #HSSK-041, are manufactured from a thicker and more heat resistant D2 High-Speed Steel with a 60 Rockwell hardness. Made by the Bohler steel mill in Austria, we specify this special high-chromium steel for its resistance to abrasion, elevated ability to hold a cutting edge and resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures. Advanced design, premium steel and a unique tempering process allow our HSS knives to hold up longer and maintain a sharper edge. Our HSS knives are dual-sided like the OEM knives giving you two uses out of them.

Our HSS knives for the Dewalt 735 are thicker and made from higher quality steel than the OEM factory knives, giving you a longer lasting edge.

Now if you want knives that last up to 10x as long as the OEM knives, take a look at our Carbide-tipped replacement knives, item #CPJK-041.  These knives feature a thick micro-grain carbide cutting edge honed to a razor-sharp edge on a custom-made CNC grinding station. We use the finest grain carbide insert possible on these knives which is one of the secrets to their long life. A nice bonus is that you can hone our carbide-tipped knives (being careful not to remove more than .010" of material) to give them longer service life. Our planer knife sharpening jig does a real nice job at getting your edge sharp again. The carbide knives are a must-have if you plane harder, more abrasive woods like teak and eucalyptus.

Quick tip: Many times we confuse a dull knife with a dirty knife. Make sure to keep your carbide cutting edges clean and resin-free. A good rule of thumb is to remove and clean your knives after a few hundred board feet. They'll last longer and cut cleaner. We recommend the Boeshield Blade & Bit Cleaner for all of your carbide saw blades, router bits and other cutting tools.

Our carbide tipped replacement knives, CPJK-041, will last up to 10 times longer than the OEM steel knives.

Installation of our HSS and Carbide Tipped knives is a breeze. They have the same hole pattern as the OEM knives making the installation a snap.  Simply replace the knives and align them up with the holes, add back the black blade holder and screws. It goes without saying, but please make sure to follow all safety indications in your user manual when changing knives.
