A Router Bit Collection Just For Flooring

If you're interested in making your own hardwood flooring, consider the time-tested Slip Tongue Joint. When installing new wood flooring, boards are first positioned at an angle and then pivoted into place. If you use a traditional square-shaped spline, the square edges will get in the way during that pivot and could crack the delicate shoulders of the grooves.

A Slip Tongue Joint solves this problem by rounding the edges of both the spline and the grooves. When you angle your new floorboards into place, the rounded edges slide right into place and your joints align easily. You get more strength than would be afforded by a bare edge-joint, and you can even use the Slip Tongue joint to join edge grain to edge grain wood.

The 00-127 Slip Tongue Flooring Router Bit comes with a 05-127 bit to create the radiused grooves, and a 54-520 Bullnose Router Bit to create a 1/4" rounded edge for your splines.

The kit includes a 1/4" x 1/2" Bearing to let the Slip Tongue Router Bit produce a 1/4" x 3/8" deep groove that can typically be used with a 1/4" x 5/8" to 1/4" x 3/4" Slip Tongue spline. When used with the included 1/4" x 5/8" Bearing it will produce a 1/4" x 5/16" deep groove that can typically be used with a 1/4" x 1/2" to 1/4" x 5/8" Slip Tongue spline. And it includes the bearing stop collar and allen kit for fast bearing changes.

Kit Includes:

  • The Slip Tongue Flooring Router Bit (05-127)
  • A 1/4" x 1/2" Bearing (BR-109) and a 1/4" x 5/8" Bearing (BR-111)
  • The 54-520 Bullnose Bit
  • Comes with a stop collar kit

Benefits:

  • Create hardwood flooring that installs smoothly without damaging your wood
  • Use as an alternative to edge-to-edge joints for much stronger, more stable glue-ups

Frequently Asked Questions

What shank size is this flooring bit kit?

The bits use a 1/4" shank, which fits routers that accept a 1/4" collet. Browse more compatible straight router bits.

What is a slip tongue joint and why use one for flooring?

A slip tongue joint rounds the edges of both the spline and the grooves so angled floorboards pivot into place without cracking the groove shoulders. It is stronger than a bare edge joint and can even join edge grain to edge grain.

What's included in the kit?

The kit includes the Slip Tongue Flooring Router Bit (05-127), a 1/4" x 1/2" bearing (BR-109), a 1/4" x 5/8" bearing (BR-111), the 54-520 Bullnose Bit, and a stop collar kit.

What groove depths can this bit cut?

With the 1/4" x 1/2" bearing it cuts a 1/4" x 3/8" deep groove; with the 1/4" x 5/8" bearing it cuts a 1/4" x 5/16" deep groove, letting you match different spline sizes.

What spline sizes work with each bearing?

The 1/4" x 3/8" groove typically suits a 1/4" x 5/8" to 1/4" x 3/4" slip tongue spline, while the 1/4" x 5/16" groove typically suits a 1/4" x 1/2" to 1/4" x 5/8" spline.

What is the bullnose bit for?

The included 54-520 Bullnose Bit creates a 1/4" rounded edge on your splines so they match the radiused grooves and slide together cleanly.

How do I switch between the two bearings?

The kit includes a bearing stop collar and Allen kit for fast bearing changes, so you can swap between the two groove depths quickly.

What is the cutter diameter and height?

The slip tongue bit has a 1-1/4" cutter diameter and a 1/4" cutter height, with a 3/4" bearing diameter.

Can I use the slip tongue joint outside of flooring?

Yes. It works as a stronger alternative to edge-to-edge joints for more stable glue-ups, including joining edge grain to edge grain. See related grooving bits.
