Rounding over a workpiece edge is easy, just grab a Roundover Router Bit with the right radius and go to town. But what about when you want to round over the corner of a workpiece? You know, like that sharp corner on the coffee table you always bang your knee on. Often a small Roundover router bit on these corners is just the ticket, but balancing a router on this narrow edge and trying to use a roundover bit is not ideal. This is made all the more difficult by the fact that these corners tend to chip out and burn because of their end-grain composition. We've put together a great package for your woodshop that'll make these problems a thing of the past. The Infinity Corner Radius Template Set (CRT-SET) includes 3 different templates (CRT-001), allowing you to radius corners from 1/8" all the way to a full 1". It also includes a double bearing pattern router bit (06-127) and a roll of 3/4" wide double-sided tape (101-286) so you have everything you need to turn your router into a radius making machine.
The templates are precision C.N.C. machined from 5/16" thick, ultra-clear and scratch-resistant acrylic and have a different radius at each corner. Four locating pins are included to make perfect placement on your workpiece a snap.
Each template has four countersunk holes allowing it to be screwed to the workpiece. For situations where screw holes are not acceptable, use a piece of the included Double-Sided Tape (101-286) to keep the template in place.
Thanks to the double-bearing configuration of the flush trim router bit, this package can be used with handheld routers or at the router table. Quality cuts are virtually guaranteed because the bearing guided flush-trim bit runs against the precision machined surface of the templates instead of your workpiece.
Included with this exclusive package is our Double Bearing Pattern Router Bit. Similar to a Top Bearing Pattern router bit but with two bearings, one mounted on the shank and one on the 'top' of the bit. This configuration allows you to put the template on either side of the workpiece and also use the templates with a handheld router or at the router table. This Infinity flush trim router bit is also ideal for use on workpieces up to a full 1" thick and the finely ground carbide edges are set at a negative angle to produce beautifully smooth cuts. If you are working with even thicker stock, we carry taller Flush Trim Router Bits or Top Bearing Pattern Router Bits to get the job done.
The final piece of this package is a roll of 3/4" wide Double-Sided Tape (101-286). Good, double-sided tape allows you to use templates without the need for screws that mark the surface of your workpiece or clamps that get in the way. After testing a lot of different tapes we found this tape to be just about perfect. Not too thick, not too thin and creates a strong bond without being impossible to remove. You could say it's the Goldilocks of double-sided tapes.
If there is one tech tip that will help ensure good results with any type of template routing it is to use a variable speed router. When we make these types of cuts we tend to ease in and move slowly. If the router bit is spinning too quickly it will burn the workpiece before we can complete the cut.
The best way to eliminate this burning is to reduce the router bits speed. Slowing the router bit will allow you to maintain a slower feeding pace without causing a burn mark. It will also help your Infinity router bits stay sharp longer.
We put this package together because we get asked lots of questions about radius routing and customers always ended up buying the components separately. The next time you go to make a radius cut on your project you'll be glad you have this package in your shop.
