Infinity router bits receive great reviews from writers and woodworkers around the world. There’s no great secret to our success, however. We’ve simply combined the best materials with the latest manufacturing equipment and techniques, then added a dose of good old-fashioned hard work. Here’s a quick tour of the features that make our router bits some of the finest in the world.
The Best Steel Bodies
Infinity does not use castings for bodies. It ‘turns’ each tool from solid steel bars. Turning the body on a computer-controlled lathe ensures a perfectly balanced tool and produces the finest possible finish on the surface of the bit or cutter. This requires steel that possesses consistent hardness and strength, and not all steels are created equal in this respect. In fact, many types of steel possess greater hardness or tensile strength at their outer periphery than they do at the center.
Consistent hardness is crucial because of the natural shape of a bit or cutter. A raised panel bit with an overall dimeter of over three inches must be ‘turned’ from a bar that’s about 3-½" in diameter. If the bar is ‘soft’ in the middle the bit’s shank will consist of the weakest steel, yet that’s the point requiring the greatest strength!
To avoid the problem of ‘soft centers’ in its tools, Infinity uses only Fatigue-Proof® or Stressproof® steel bars. These patented alloys are drawn through special dies using a process called ‘elevated temperature drawing’ (e.t.d®). This technique uses carefully controlled temperature during the drawing process to produce a steel bar with remarkably uniform strength.
Fatigue-proof® and Stressproof® steel bars are used in automotive transmissions, machine tools, mining machinery and many other applications where strength and reliability are crucial. That’s why they’re the only bars used by Infinity.
Optimized Shear Angle
Most woodworkers know that a shearing cut is more efficient than a straight cut, slicing rather than chopping. Infinity Tools optimizes the shear angle on each rout bit to balance between the perfect angle for the cut required, and not putting too much stress on the carbide edge. This leads to a perfect cut, and a long life for your bits!
Extra-Thick Micrograin Carbide Tips
Tungsten carbide is composed of granules of carbide powder and a cobalt binder bonded together under tremendous heat and pressure. The size of the granules and the ratio of carbide to cobalt are the critical variables among differing grades of carbide.
Infinity has selected a micro grain carbide that is generally recognized as the best material for woodworking applications. With a Rockwell hardness of 92 and a cobalt content of only 6%, this micro grain is very durable and holds a sharp edge far longer than carbide with a more coarse grain structure.
Anti-Kickback Design
The purpose of the anti-kickback design is to limit how deeply the cutting edges bite into the material. By reducing the space that can trap or grab a wooden edge, dangerous kickbacks are avoided. Infinity uses the optimal size to provide the safest bits available.
Non-Stick Coating
Infinity coats all of its router bits and shaper cutters with a tough layer of silver Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), the same nonstick material found on millions of pots and pans. The famous nonstick properties of PTFE are known to just about anyone who has ever fried an egg. On cutting tools that nonstick surface is just as valuable, reducing the build-up of sap and pitch that hinders performance.
Double-Sealed Ball Bearings
Dust and lubricants are a bad combination. And when dust gets in a ball bearing, it slows the bearing rotation and can even lock up the bearing, making it useless. Infinity Tools used double-sealed ball bearings to make sure dust stays out and your bits continue to operate smoothly.
If you're looking for the best and finest for your shop, then look no further. Infinity Tools router bits are built with quality, for excellent performance and a long life.
