Frequently Asked Questions

What is an HVLP spray system and why do woodworkers use it?

HVLP stands for High Volume Low Pressure. An HVLP spray system atomizes finish at low air pressure, which transfers more material to the workpiece and produces less overspray than conventional spray guns. Woodworkers use them for smooth, brush-mark-free results on furniture and cabinets.

What finishes can I spray with the Earlex HVLP systems?

Earlex HVLP systems can spray a wide range of wood finishes including lacquers, water-based polyurethanes, oils, varnishes, stains, and paints. Thicker finishes may need to be thinned to the appropriate viscosity, which the Earlex Viscosity Cup helps you measure precisely.

How does the Earlex steam generator work for wood bending?

The Earlex Steam Generator heats water to produce a continuous flow of steam that is directed into a steam box containing the wood blank. Steam softens the lignin in wood fibers, allowing the blank to be bent around a form without breaking.

What is a viscosity cup and do I need one for spray finishing?

A viscosity cup measures how quickly finish flows through a small orifice, which indicates its thickness. Knowing the viscosity of your finish helps you thin it to the optimal spraying consistency for your spray gun, reducing runs, orange peel, and tip clogs.

Are replacement fluid tips available for Earlex spray guns?

Yes. Infinity Tools carries replacement fluid tips for the Earlex 5700 and fluid tip, needle, and air cap sets for the Earlex 6300. Swapping fluid tips lets you adjust the spray pattern to suit different finish viscosities.

How do I clean an Earlex spray gun after use?

Run the appropriate solvent through the gun immediately after finishing — water for water-based products, lacquer thinner for solvent-based products. The Earlex Spray Gun Cleaning Kit includes the brushes and picks needed to clean the fluid tip, needle, and air cap thoroughly.

Is the Earlex HVLP system suitable for production cabinet finishing?

Yes. The Earlex 5700 is a stationary turbine system designed for sustained, repeated use in production environments. Its consistent air volume and pressure output make it suitable for finishing multiple cabinet doors or drawer fronts in a single session.

Where can I learn more about HVLP spray finishing techniques?

The Infinity Tools Learn blog covers spray finishing setup, viscosity adjustment, pattern tuning, and other technique topics that help woodworkers get the most from HVLP equipment.
