HVLP stands for High Volume, Low Pressure. This type of spray system atomizes finish at low air pressure, which reduces overspray and bounce-back compared to conventional spray guns. The result is better material transfer efficiency, a more uniform coat, and less finish wasted as airborne mist in the shop.

The Earlex 5700 is compatible with water-based and oil-based stains, water-based and oil-based topcoats, latex paints, and milk paints, provided materials are thinned to the correct viscosity. Use the Earlex Ford 4 viscosity cup to verify consistency before spraying.

Use a viscosity cup—like the Earlex Ford 4 Viscosity Cup—to time how long the material takes to drain through the cup's orifice. Compare that to the material manufacturer's recommended viscosity for spraying, then add the appropriate thinner (water for water-based, mineral spirits for oil-based) until the flow time matches.

A rotating spray table lets you spin the workpiece 360 degrees during spraying without touching the wet finish surface. This means you can coat all sides and edges of a piece without stopping, moving the project, or creating finger marks in wet material.

A spray booth isn't strictly required, but it is strongly recommended for controlling overspray and improving ventilation. The Homeright Portable Spray Booth is a compact, folding option suited to smaller workshop spaces and helps contain airborne finish particles.

Flush the gun immediately after spraying by running the appropriate solvent (water for water-based, mineral spirits for oil-based finish) through the system until it runs clear. The Earlex Spray Gun Cleaning Kit includes brushes and picks for cleaning needle passages, air caps, and fluid tips thoroughly.

Thin water-based finishes typically spray well through smaller fluid tip openings (around 1.0–1.5mm), while thicker materials like gel stains or latex paints require a larger tip (1.8mm or greater) to atomize properly without sputtering. Consult the material's technical data sheet or your spray gun manufacturer's tip selection chart.

The Earlex Steam Generator is used for steam bending wood, not for finishing. It generates steam that is piped into a steam box to make solid wood pliable enough to bend to tight curves without breaking—a traditional technique for chair parts, boat ribs, and curved furniture components.

Most General Finishes water-based stains, dye stains, milk paints, and topcoats in our stains, paints & finishes collection are HVLP-sprayable when thinned appropriately. Check individual product data sheets for recommended application methods and thinning ratios.
