Titebond Original (I) is an interior-only PVA glue with a shorter open time — ideal for fast assemblies in controlled shop conditions. Titebond II is water-resistant (passes the ANSI Type II water-resistance test) and works for indoor and some outdoor projects. Titebond III is fully waterproof (ANSI Type I rated), has the longest open time of the three, and is the right choice for outdoor furniture or anything exposed to moisture.

CA glue is best when you need an almost instant bond, are working with non-porous materials, need to stabilize a crack before machining, or are doing small inlay or repair work where clamps are impractical. Wood (PVA) glue produces a stronger long-grain bond on porous wood and should be used for structural joinery like mortise-and-tenon or edge glue-ups.

Liquid hide glue is a traditional animal-protein adhesive that remains reversible — joints can be taken apart with heat and moisture, making it the preferred choice for antique restoration and musical instrument repair. It also creeps slightly under long-term stress, which actually helps joints in solid-wood furniture stay tight over time.

Apply glue to both mating surfaces for better coverage, then allow a 30–60 second open time before assembly so the glue becomes slightly tacky. Cauls (straight clamping boards) distribute pressure evenly across the panel. You can also add a small amount of thick CA glue and activator at the ends to tack the boards in place before applying bar clamps.

Titebond III is FDA-approved for indirect food contact once fully cured, making it suitable for cutting boards, serving trays, and kitchen furniture joints. For surfaces that will be in direct, repeated contact with food, finish over the glued assembly with a dedicated food-safe finish from our Oils & Waxes collection.

Standard PVA wood glues have an open time of roughly 5–10 minutes at 70°F; cooler temperatures extend open time while warmer temperatures shorten it. Never glue below 55°F — the adhesive will not cure properly. High humidity also slows curing. Extended-open formulas or liquid hide glue give you more working time for complex multi-part assemblies.

Epoxy is excellent for filling gaps, bonding dissimilar materials (wood to metal, wood to stone), and stabilizing punky or deteriorated wood. For tight-fitting wood-to-wood joints, PVA glue is typically stronger because it penetrates the wood fibers, while epoxy primarily forms a mechanical bond at the surface. Let PVA glue squeeze-out gel rather than wiping it wet — wet glue smeared into grain will seal the wood and cause blotchy staining. Once rubbery, peel or pare it away with a chisel. For CA glue, acetone dissolves it; for hide glue, warm water and mild heat work well.

Double-sided tape holds workpieces to router tables, CNC beds, or auxiliary jigs without screws or clamps that could interfere with cutting paths.
