Infinity Wood Threading Taps
We've designed our new Woodworking Taps to produce clean and sharp threads in your choice of hard or softwood. They're made of high-speed steel and are machined to a tight tolerance for precision and accuracy. We apply our proprietary Chrome-Armor plating to each tap for durability, lubricity, and corrosion resistance. Unlike metalworking taps that tend to 'crush' a thread into the wood, our taps cut cleanly and have ideal flute geometry and chip clearance for making defined threads that will accept your choice of bolts.
Have you ever wished you could just tap a hole in a piece of wood and screw it together like a piece of metal? I know I have. This would be a huge time saver for making all sorts of jigs, fixtures, and even complete projects. The Infinity Tools Wood Threading Taps allow you to do just that; tap threads into a piece of wood so you can use standard hardware store bolts. Worried about strength? Don't be, in most cases these taps will create joints that are as strong or stronger than if you were to use some form of a metal insert, let's take a closer look.
The Infinity Tools Wood Threading Taps are available individually in six imperial sizes from 1/4"-20 to 9/16"-12 and three metric sizes, M6, M8, & M10. All allow you to quickly and easily cut threads into hardwood, softwood, and plywood. We also have these taps available in a variety of money-saving sets.
Unlike taps for metal, these unique taps have been designed specifically for wood in order to cut clean, strong threads. Instead of a square drive, these have a hex drive and are intended for use in a handheld drill. The long, thin shanks allow you to tap holes up to 3-1/4" deep, most metal taps can only reach about 1" at best.
Standard metal taps have a long "lead" specifically for starting in metal. The Infinity Wood Taps have a short "lead" making them better for starting in wood and allows them to cut threads almost all the way to the bottom of a blind hole.
Just like our saw blades, we go the extra mile and Chrome-Armor plate our taps. This keeps the taps from rusting, reduces friction, and makes them easier to keep clean.
Our taps are made of high-speed steel. We chose HSS specifically for its edge-holding characteristics to extend the life of the tool and because it cuts clean threads in all types of wood. To eliminate clogging the Infinity Wood Taps have extra-large flutes that clear wood shavings much better than a metal tap.
Each tap is laser marked with its size and the correct pilot hole size for use in softwood and plywood. If using the taps in hardwoods and some dense plywoods you will want to choose a pilot hole size roughly 1/32" larger. Don't worry, these taps are tough, you will know when to switch to a larger pilot size because the tap will become difficult to start. Once started, the tap will "self-feed", only requiring you to gently guide the drill. Once the hole is tapped to the desired depth, put your drill in reverse and back the tap out and you are done.
How strong of a joint can these taps create? Without getting too technical the answer is, pretty darn strong. We drilled and tapped a pair of 1/4"-20 holes 1" deep in a piece of Pine 2x4, installed a pair of eye hooks, and used it to pick up our router table. At over 130 pounds the router table was no match for the tapped holes and ensures that simple jigs, fixtures, and knockdown furniture created with an Infinity Tools Wood Threading Tap will definitely be up to the task.
