Whether you're sanding finishes between coats or putting a Scary Sharp edge on your favorite set of chisels, Mirka Wet/Dry sandpaper sheets will let you take your project to the showroom with pride.

A set of chisels or plane blades can be made sharp as scalpels and mirror bright with a wet sharpening from this highly durable paper. Just put a bit of water on your lapping surface and then lay down the paper. Add some more water on top and spread it even until the paper is stuck down to the lapping surface. Work your way up through to the 2500 grit and you will have reached the finest level of abrasion that is possible to be bonded to a paper surface.

Alternatively, shellacs, stains, and lacquers can be made as smooth as glass by lightly dry sanding between coats. During the curing process exposed wood fibers expand and shift, creating rough spots on the wood surface. Light passes with a series of high grit sandpaper without water will remove those rough spots and create perfectly smooth surface for your next coat of finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grits are the Mirka Wet/Dry sheets available in?

They are offered in 220, 1200, 1500, and 2000 grit, covering everything from leveling to ultra-fine polishing. See more in our sandpaper collection.

How big are the sheets and how many come per pack?

Each sheet is 9" x 11", and you can choose your grit along with 10 or 50 sheets per pack.

Can I use this sandpaper to sharpen chisels and plane blades?

Yes. Using the Scary Sharp method, you can make chisels and plane blades sharp as scalpels and mirror bright by lapping them on the paper over a flat surface. Pair with our sharpening supplies for best results.

What is the Scary Sharp method?

It's wet sharpening on sandpaper: wet a flat lapping surface, lay down the paper, add water on top, then work up through the grits. The result is a perfectly flat sole and an extremely keen, mirror-bright cutting edge.

Can I sand between finish coats with this paper?

Yes. Lightly dry sanding shellacs, stains, and lacquers between coats removes raised grain and nibs, leaving a glass-smooth surface for the next coat. Browse our wood stains & finishes.

Is this paper wet or dry sandpaper?

Both. Mirka Wet/Dry sheets are designed for either wet or dry sanding, so you can hone tools with water or sand finishes dry between coats.

What abrasive grain does it use?

The sheets use an aluminum oxide / silicon carbide grain with a resin-over-resin bond for durability across wet and dry use.

Why do I need to sand between coats of finish?

During curing, exposed wood fibers expand and shift, creating rough spots. Light passes with high-grit paper remove those rough spots and create a perfectly smooth surface for the next coat of finish.

Which grit should I start with?

For honing edges or smoothing finishes, work progressively from a lower grit like 220 up through 1200, 1500, and 2000 for the finest polish. More options in power sanding.

Who makes this sandpaper?

It is made by Mirka Abrasives. Explore more of their abrasives in our sanding & abrasives selection.
