Leigh D24 Vacuum and Router Support

Regular price $159.90

The Leigh D24 Vacuum and Router Support is a simple but innovative accessory for the D4R PRO. The D24 keeps your router supported and level with the jig, while also providing an efficient dust collection port perfectly positioned to suck in chips and debris as they are ejected. The port hangs below the support structure and follows along with the router as you work across the jig. The attachment is so well integrated that one might not know it’s there, but it would certainly be missed if it weren’t.

Whether used in contemporary, or classic furniture, dovetail joinery is a highlight of quality woodworking.

Infinity Tools offers a large selection of dovetail bits designed with negative shear angle to provide ultra smooth cuts, and they’re available in all sizes and for all needs. But one thing that doesn’t change …  is the general shape of the bit. The weakest point of all dovetail router bits is their neck. To get the longest life possible from this type of bit, we recommend pre-plowing the groove before cutting the dovetail slot.

Pre-plowing is the concept of using a straight bit (sized smaller than the diameter of the neck) to first cut a clearance channel. Start by finding the diameter of the neck of the dovetail bit using a caliper.

Then you locate an appropriate straight bit slightly under the diameter of the neck of the dovetail bit. Use that straight bit to set up the plowing cut.

You make a first pass with the straight bit to remove much of the waste. Remember don’t run this straight bit too fast. Let the bit cut.

The dovetail bit is then used to follow through that channel, but the stress on the bit is greatly reduced, leading to better dovetail cuts … and a longer life for your dovetail bits!

Follow this simple tip and you'll get the best performance from your dovetail router bits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jig is the Leigh D24 designed for?

The D24 is an accessory for the Leigh D4R PRO dovetail jig.

What are the two main functions of the D24?

It keeps your router supported and level with the jig, and it provides an efficient dust collection port positioned to capture chips and debris as they are ejected.

How does the dust port stay in the right place?

The port hangs below the support structure and follows along with the router as you work across the jig, so it captures debris right where it's created.

Why is dust collection helpful when routing dovetails?

Routing dovetails on a jig is notoriously dusty. Pulling chips away at the source keeps your layout lines visible and your shop clean. Browse more dust collection options.

Who makes the D24?

It is made by Leigh, the same company behind the D4R PRO dovetail jig.

Does the D24 help keep the router level?

Yes. One of its core jobs is to support the back end of the router so it stays level with the jig throughout the cut, improving consistency.

How do I connect the D24 to my dust collector?

Connect its port to your vacuum or collector using the appropriate dust collection fittings and hoses and accessories.

Is the D24 noticeable while you work?

No. The attachment is so well integrated that you might not know it's there during use, yet its support and dust collection are clearly missed without it.

Will the D24 improve my dovetail accuracy?

By keeping the router level and clearing chips so your layout lines and jig fingers stay visible, the D24 helps you rout cleaner, more accurate dovetail joints.

Can I use this with my existing shop vacuum?

Yes. The D24's dust port is designed to connect to standard dust collection, so you can run it off a shop vacuum or dust collector using the right hoses and accessories.
