I have ordered stave core stiles and rails from Wolf Lumber in PA; they will be 2 1/4" x 8" (oak stave core with 1/4" cherry veneer on the faces and 3/4" cherry stock on the edges and ends). I am planning on cutting mortise pockets in the stiles - and am looking for a router bit for that purpose. I am looking for the right bits to buy for making the mortise pockets; it seems that using a 1/2" dia cutter (with top bearing) is a good choice - but it looks like the bits you make are only about 2" long - not long enough to cut a 4" pocket? Do you make/sell a bit that will route a 4" deep pocket? Any suggestions on how to go about making my mortise pockets? Should I worry about using mortise and tenons with a stave core door? See more »

A 4" depth of cut will not be possible with a router bit and handheld router. Our longest spiral router bit has an overall length of 4" and roughly 1" will be housed in the router collet. If a 4" depth of cut is desired you may want to consider using a Forstner bit in a drill press to remove the majority of waste then clean up the mortise with a chisel.

would it be possible to get router bit 01-818 with the stated dimensions (1/2" shank and 1/2" cutting diameter and 15/64 cutting height) with a bearing? See more »

No, in order to have a bearing the cutting diameter must be larger than the shank.

I'm routing guitar pickup cavities using a pattern. The wood is black walnut. I'm looking at 11-127B and 01-127B. What's the difference between them? Would you recommend a different bit for this application? See more »

The biggest difference between the 01-128 and the 11-127 is the cutter height. The 01-128 has a cutting height of 5/16" and the 11-127 has a cutting height is 3/4" which one would work for you depends on several variables such as pattern thickness and pocket depth for the pickup. Typically I would recommend using a guide bushing and a down cut spiral bit for your application, as the bushing eliminates the limitations of a bearing guided bit. As long as your template is designed to take into account the offset created by the bushing this would be the ideal method.
