A rabbet plane is a hand plane with a blade that extends the full width of its sole, allowing it to cut recesses (rabbets) right to a shoulder or into an inside corner. It is used for fitting joints, trimming tenon cheeks, cleaning up machine-cut dadoes, and fitting drawer bottoms.

Both have full-width blades, but shoulder planes are typically narrower, lower in profile, and optimized for trimming the flat cheeks and shoulders of tenons. Rabbet planes tend to be wider and are better suited for cutting or widening rabbet recesses. In practice the terms overlap and many planes serve both functions.
