A bowl gouge has a deep flute and thick walls to withstand the interrupted, heavy cuts of bowl turning. A spindle gouge has a shallower flute and is ground for detail work on between-center spindles such as chair legs and tool handles. Using the wrong gouge for the application increases catch risk.
