3 Simple Steps to a Fresh Bench Surface

Infinity Cutting Tools |

Every now and then, a workbench needs some love.

Workbenches take a daily beating. From chisel work, to stain samples, our benches see hard use. So it’s no surprise that every now and then they need a little TLC.

With a little time and simple products, your bench will look much better!

We recently needed to refinish our own shop’s workbench. Conveniently, Infinity Tools has almost every sanding solution you can ask for in a woodworking shop.

Your best friend is a random orbit sander.

We used our 5” Mirka Deros sander (102-500) that uses hook-and-loop papers to quickly swap between grits.

Overlapping patterns keep from dishing any area.

The Deros on-board dust collection (102-510) kept our work zone clean and free of sawdust!

Working through grits will be the smart plan.

To make quick work of removing the wear and stains, we used several sheets of Mirka Abranet 150-grit paper (102-162.50).

Edges need love, too.

Don't forget to break the sharp edges to avoid splinters and cuts.

After sanding, strategic putty will help with the worst offenses.

After sanding, we needed to fill a few dents and bruises, and we reached for Gork’s Goodfilla wood filler.

We find Goodfilla easy to use and very adaptable.

We used the Maple/Beech/Pine color for the best possible match to the natural wood color (117-504). We let the filler dry and then sanded it smooth.

Odie's wax will add even longer protection to your new finish.

All workbenches should have a coating on them to help resist against future staining from spills or overspray. We used Odie’s Oil Wood Wax (115-409), applied with a paper towel. A little wax goes a long way, so it didn’t take much to cover the entire bench.

Odie's Safer Solvent made it easy to level all.

We left the wax to set up for a day and then we wiped the surface down with Odie’s Oil Safer Solvent (115-410), using a paper towel to buff the entire surface.  The solvent knocked down any excess wax and helped to even out and fill the surface pores, making for a smooth and even bench top.

A beautiful bench, with a few simple products.

After just a little shop time, we have a bench with a refreshed surface that will stay looking good for years to come. And it’s ready for years of continued use.
