Can the bearing be placed on the top? the opposite from the way the bearing is positioned in the photos?

A bearing can indeed be added to the shank side of the Infinity Tools Slot Cutter w/ 1/2" Shank Arbor. To do this, you would need to use a different bearing ( 1/2" x 7/8" ) along with a 1/2" stop collar to securely retain the bearing in place, ensuring optimal performance of your slotting cutter.
