I see the universal d handle baseplate allows dadoes up to 5-1/2" from fence--how close to the fence can it be used for this?

In most cases, the fence should be able to reach the centerline of the routers collect. Unless your router has an unusually large base you should have no issues moving the fence close enough to the bit for your application.
