Will a lighter gel stain cover a slightly darker finish on light maple or pickled oak cabinets?

I currently have cabinets finished with a light maple or pickled oak finish. I'm not sure exactly. Will the "new pine" gel stain affect the finish? Specifically, can a lighter gel stain cover a slightly darker existing finish? Thank you.

Stains are typically designed for use on bare wood. You can use a dry brushing technique with gel stain however this typically is only recommended when going from light to dark. Trying to make a finish lighter usually does not work as well.
