Will General Finishes High Performance Water-Based Urethane keep maple white? Can I top it with Arm-R-Seal without yellowing?
General Finishes High Performance Top Coat
I was told that if I use a water based urethane on my curly maple pieces that also have some dark wood glued next to it, that the curly maple will not darken and remain very white. I tried this with another product and it worked fine. My question is, if I use this High Performance Water based product, by General Finishes, can I then use a Arm-R-Seal topcoat over this? I use Arm-R-Seal oil and urethane or oil top coats all the time, but they will yellow the maple just a bit.

You can apply Oil Based Arm-R-Seal over water based high performance once the high performance is fully cured. High performance is a very clear (no amber tint) finish, however if you apply the oil over it, the oil will still impart a slight amber color. I would recommend finishing the parts you want to have the amber color first than finish everything with High Performance. This will insure that you get the colors you are after. Be sure to follow the instructions General Finishes offers Mixing oil based and water based Finishes. I would also recommend considering Enduro-Var rather than the Arm-R-Seal. Enduro-Var is water based but with the amber color of an oil. This would eliminate any compatibility issues you may run into and simplify your finish schedule.
