Our planes are ready to go out of the box. I do recommend sharpening the irons Prior to use. Smoothing planes more so than any other tools require a very sharp edge to perform well. I would recommend sharpening the iron of any plane regardless of manufacture prior to use. Both sharpness and camber affect the results of a plane in use. Both are adjusted during the sharpening process making sharpening the most important skill a hand tool woodworker can posses.
