Looking for a finish for cedar tables to withstand food spills and heavy use. How does your finish perform with multiple coats?
Odie's Oil Food Safe Wood Finish - 9 oz. Jar
I'm going to to be making a few tables for a friend's restaurant and am looking for a finish. These tables will be subject to spilled food, dropped utensils and other abuses. Being food safe is a must as is resistance to this physical abuse. My friend wants me to use cedar which is very soft but attractive. How will your finishes hold up and would it help to apply more then one coat?

My concern would be with using Cedar itself, being so soft it will show wear very quickly. Odie's Oil is a non film building finish and while it is very resistant to spills and hardens some, it will not significantly harden Cedar. The advantage to Odie's Oil would be that it can be re coated easily at any time. A porous wood like Cedar may require multiple coats depending on the sheen desired and the method of application. The goal is to apply thin coats of oil following the manufacturers instructions until the wood stops absorbing the finish. This insures that the wood is fully saturated. Then allow the finish to cure fully before putting the tables to use. Even with a hard film finish, when the cedar tables are dented the finish will crack, or scratch showing unsightly marks. Unless a rustic look is desired I would recommend a different species for such a high traffic environment.
