My VD-1/4 vac generator is losing vacuum. Does it need periodic cleaning or filter replacement?
Venturi Vacuum System
I'm have been using the VD-1/4 vac. generator for the past 2 years connected to a chuck to hold down parts for dicing. Recently, I have lost vacuum to the device. there was actually air coming out of the vacuum port. I took the unit apart and cleaned out a small amount of debris. The vacuum worked again but is giving me about 21". Do these generators need to be cleaned periodically and does the muffler/filter need to be replaced?

If you have air exiting out of the vacuum port I would suspect there is a clog of some sort after the venturi itself causing positive pressure in the venturi rather than the low pressure that should be present. the easy way to check would be to remove the muffler and inspect and test with the muffler removed There is also a small brass filter housed in the vacuum extension. (the silver part in the photo) this could be clogged I would recommend cleaning with something like carburetor cleaner or other. The brass filter can be removed to test if it is causing restriction but I do not recommend removing it for regular use as wear to the Venturi orfice can result and permanently reduce vacuum capability.
